Karen in New Zealand

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Kawawada at the age of 50.

Karen was born in Edmonton, Alberta, to Naoyoshi and Aiko (née Matsubara) Kawawada. In her short time, Karen traveled, lived, and worked throughout much of the world. She was a talented creative writer and science communicator. She made her mark through her kindness and generosity, coupled with her determination and keen intellect.

Karen will be deeply missed by her husband, Jon MacKay, and their two children, Mari and Aya. This February marks 18 years of their happy marriage.

In keeping with Karen's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity as an expression of sympathy.

Charities

In her will, Karen requested that instead of sending flowers or similar gifts that people consider giving to a charity of their choice.

I've included a list of suggested charities along with financial reviews so people can make an informed choice.

Bruce Trail

Karen was an avid outdoors person and we spent considerable time hiking, including on the Bruce Trail. [Review]

Operation Eyesight

Her work with the School of Optometry communicating the latest initiatives and research was meaningful. Karen was a tremendously empathetic person who believed it was important to help others. [Review]

David Suzuki Foundation

The work of the David Suzuki Foundation was close to Karen's heart. [Review]

Celebration of Life

A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held in the Spring/Summer. Exact dates and times will be announced on Karen's Facebook group established for updates while she was in hospital, or you can email her husband Jon MacKay and ask to be notified.
